Everyone has a story about when they were growing up in St Maarten or is it Sin Maarten?
Visitors and locals who have either lived or have been coming to St Maarten for years can all agree on one thing, it is going downhill rapidly.
Nothing is new in politics, therefore nothing is really new in St Maarten politics also, but in the era of the internet, the information is just now being generally known.
The St Maarten government’s solution to the problem, was not to arrest the crooked politicians looting the citizens, and it was not to hire more law enforcement to combat the growing problem of crime.
Their only solution it appears was to incarcerate, harass and persecute anyone who dared to publicly voice their opinion about the rapid decline of St Maarten.
Trying to censor, arrest and even kill bloggers and other activist who stand up against the system will do absolutely nothing to help the government in concealing the dirty little truth that lies beneath St Maarten’s thinly laid facade.
While actively committing crimes, in order to shut down certain blogs, and going as far as to kill to disrupt the messenger has backfired on a government and country that was once held in high esteem by their number one generator of cash, the tourist.
The people travelling to St Maarten have the option of doing a quick Google check of the area, even those not coming to SXM, but planning to.
What they see is not only the robberies, rapes, murders and more that is usually concealed from the headlines of the Daily Papers. They are also seeing that in a country that is supposed to be Democratic, bloggers and other activists alike are being locked up, assaulted, their animals are killed, their family and friends are threatened.
Some tourist, many who have come to the island often before post openly on Facebook that they will never return.
Many who legally live in SXM, and contribute their tax dollars and more are also packing up and leaving.
The sad part is the government and its cohorts have stashed away enough of their loot, tax free. So when SXM does go into a free fall. The only ones really falling will be the St Maarteners.
